What are the start up costs in private practice?

The startup costs for a therapist in private practice can vary depending on many factors such as the location, practice size, and the services offered. Here are some of the typical startup costs to consider when starting out:

  1. Office Space: Renting or leasing an office space is one of the primary startup costs. The cost will depend on the location, size, and condition of the office. Rent will also dramatically vary if you join a group practice as an independent contractor, or if you take on a commercial lease of your own. There are many pros and cons here for both situations.

  2. Furniture and Equipment: You will need to purchase furniture such as chairs, tables, desks, and decor as well as equipment such as a computer, printer, phone, and office supplies.

  3. Licensing and Insurance: Depending on where you live regulations vary. You may need to obtain a license to practice as a therapist, which involves a fee. You will also need liability insurance to protect your practice as well as a business license for the city in which you are practicing. You should also consider content insurance for your office and belongs in the case of damage or theft.

  4. Marketing and Advertising: You may need to invest in marketing and advertising to promote your practice, such as creating a website, business cards, and brochures. Some therapists hire advertising support such a google and social media ads. I cover a module on marketing in my course and don’t believe that purchasing ads are entirely necessary.

  5. Professional Memberships: Joining professional organizations can provide networking opportunities, continuing education, and other resources.
